Obesity and Pet Health Issues

pet health issuesThe pet food provider Hill's Pet Nutrition, recently released the results of a study done on pets. It appears one of the biggest pet health issues is obesity and over eating. The pet food company concluded that the increase in fat pets is directly related in the increase of overweight humans; they believe the two scales are parallel. In the study, 80 percent of veterinarians were hesitant to tell pet owners about pet weight problems because the owners had similar weight issues. The veterinarians were afraid comments would be insulting to an owner. By not telling them the veterinarians are allowing the pets to continually suffer and die a slow death. I'm sure the obese owners understand obesity isn't healthy and what it can lead to. So don't be coy but be sincere!

Our research turned up similar results in that up to half of all dogs are obese and that the percentage is climbing. And between 60 and 70% of the owners of fat dogs don’t think their dogs are obese, according to the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Just like humans, it is all about diet and exercise, and the health benefits make it worth the effort. Here are some of the complications that come with having an overweight dog:

Complicate other diseases and disorders
Exercise and heat intolerance
Glucose tolerance imbalances
Fatigue
Heart strain and cardiovascular problems
Increased risks from anesthesia and during certain surgical procedures
Joint and bone problems
Low energy
Poor Circulation
Sleep depravation
Weakened immune system
